Thermostat Maintenance Musts

Keeping your home at a comfortable climate is extremely important, and there’s no tool more helpful than a working thermostat to do so. However, just like most appliances or fixtures in your home, thermostats need a bit of TLC and maintenance in order to keep them working as efficiently as possible. That being said, here are some of the most important thermostat maintenance musts to consider.

Test – Get in the habit of testing your thermostat at least once a year. Simple tape a household thermometer on the wall next to your thermostat and compare readings after for accuracy. The best time to test is in the fall while temperatures are moderately mild. That way, if your thermostat requires repairs before the cold winter hits, you’ll have plenty of time to call for them.

Adjust – Your thermostat has a built in anticipator that tells the furnace or boiler to shut off a bit early, while still producing enough heat to keep a room warm. If you notice that your system is cycling on and off too often, adjusting your anticipator to a higher setting can solve the issue. On the other hand, if your system is not kicking on often enough, adjusting to a lower setting will work.

Tune – Tuning up a thermostat can be difficult to an inexperienced DIYer, which is why we recommend leaving this task to your HVAC expert. In order to calibrate the system, you’ll need a professional to dive into the inner-workings of the thermostat and poke around under “the hood.”

Replace – If your thermostat is outdated, we suggest upgrading to a newer, more energy-efficient model as soon as possible. Not only are older thermostats more likely to be word and malfunctioning, but newer models come with more easily programmable features which save you both time and money.
