4 Tips to Make Your HVAC System Long-Lasting

Installing a central heating and cooling system in your home is certainly an investment, but one that’s well worth the return. Not only will this type of system keep your home at a comfortable temperature year-round, but it will boost resale value as well. However, should your HVAC system break or malfunction, repairs can be costly and the affects on your home and it’s ROI can be less than desirable. To help, here are a few ways you can ensure that your system is running strong for as long as possible.

1. Schedule an annual check-up. Just like you, your heating and cooling system needs an annual check-up to make sure everything is still running smoothly. While you may be tempted to save on maintenance costs, having your system assessed annually can actually save you money in the long run.

2. Keep your radiators clean. Just as your ducts can get dirty, so can your radiators, vents and baseboards. The more dirt that’s in the way, the harder your system will work and the more likely it is to burn out prematurely. To help, make sure to add vacuuming these items to your regular cleaning list.

3. Change your filters often. Disposable furnace and air conditioner filters are the most commonly used, which should be replaced monthly. However, if you’re looking to improve your air quality even more you can purchase a higher grade HEPA filter, which will require replacement less often.

4. Keep your AC uncovered. Many people cover up their outdoor AC unit for the winter, but this is actually not necessary. Outdoor units have been specifically designed to withstand the harsh elements, and covering it can trap moisture which leads to to rust and deterioration over time.
