8 Tricks to Lower Your Heating Bills in November

Feeling like a slave to your oil company as the temperatures continue to drop? We get it — home heating bills are some of the most costly utility expenses homeowners face during fall and winter. If you’re looking to find a few ways to save money this season, here are a few tricks to help you lower your heating costs without sacrificing warmth.

    1. Let there be light! Sunlight can work wonders when it comes to warming your home from the outside in. On sunny days, open up the curtains on your south-facing windows to let the sun in. Just remember to close them up at night to keep the heat from escaping.
    1. Fix up your furnace. Checking your furnace and replacing filters monthly will ensure that your equipment continues to run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Should you experience any issues with your heating system, call your local HVAC expert right away.
    1. Use a humidifier. The more moisture in the air, the more likely it will be to hold in the heat. By nature, cold winter air is often very dry, but purchasing and running a humidifier can help.
    1. Use exhaust fans sparingly. While they’re certainly necessary to use at times, running your kitchen or bathroom exhaust fan for long periods of time can deplete your home of warm air. Instead, try to use them only when absolutely necessary!
    1. Insulate your air ducts. If you’ve got forced hot air, making sure your air ducts are properly insulated is a must! Wrap them up nice and tight and secure any joints properly to minimize heat loss while your forced air is in transit.
    1. Give vents space to breathe. If you want your air vents or radiators to use less energy, you’ll have to help them work smarter, not harder. Make sure your vents aren’t blocked by debris or large furniture.
    1. Run ceiling fans in reverse. Hot air rises, but you can combat that! Run your ceiling fans in reverse to help push some of that warm air back down. Some fans have a reverse mode, while others will require you to flip your fan blades manually.
  1. Upgrade your thermostat. Nowadays thermostats are smarter than ever. Not only are they able to tell the temperature of your home, but new age thermostats can also make automatic adjustments throughout the day to help you heat your home as cost-effectively as possible.
