Why is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air

Your furnace is made up of four main parts: the fuel system, the burners, the fan and the ducts. If any of these items is malfunctioning, your furnace will not be able to do its job and heat your home. Here are some of the most common furnace issues to help you troubleshoot a cold air issue.

No Fuel – The first thing to check when your furnace is refusing to warm your home is your fuel. Often times homeowners may not realize that their tank is empty, especially during high-heating times in the winter months.

Old Filter – If you haven’t changed your furnace’s filter in quite some time, this may be your issue. An old furnace can become clogged and prevent air from flowing from your furnace fans into your ducts.

Damaged Ducts – It’s possible that your ductwork has somehow become broken or unhooked, which allows warm air to leak out. If this is the case, your house will not warm up since the airflow is insufficient.

Dirty Workings – Your condensate pumps, burner and other parts of the furnace can become clogged with dust and dirt over time. Gumming up the works will prevent each part from functioning, which in turn will affect the entire system’s ability to work.

System Glitch – Many of today’s furnace systems are controlled electronically. Just like computers, electronic furnaces systems can sometimes hit a snag or a glitch. If this is the case, rebooting your system might be the answer.
