Your Furnace Isn’t Going to Make it Through the Winter

Fall is in full swing in the New England area, so we’re definitely hitting prime-time for pumping heat into our homes. The last thing you want is to be caught without a heat source this season… or even more dreadful, in the dead of winter! There’s nothing worse than coming in from the cold, only to be hit with even more cold. Don’t be that guy! Pay close attention to your furnace and the things that it’s telling you — some of them might indicate that repairs or replacement are in order.

Sign #1: It’s over the hill.

The first sign that a furnace needs replacing is its age. Generally speaking, if your furnace has surpassed the 15-year mark, it’s time to start searching for a new one. If it’s between 10-15 years of age, keep a close eye and get comfortable with the idea of replacing sooner rather than later.

Sign #2: It’s seriously high-maintenance.

Do you find yourself constantly having to dish out money for repairs? If so, purchasing a brand new furnace might be money better spent. Nobody likes a “taker!” Time to drop that old furnace like a bad habit.

Sign #3: It’s unpredictable.

If your home’s heating patterns are inconsistent regardless of how high or low you set the thermostat, your furnace is probably on the fritz. A new furnace will help heat your home evenly from room to room. That way, you won’t have to play the wardrobe lotto everytime you get up to get dressed in the morning!

Sign #4: It’s making your bills sky-high.

Have you seen an unexplainable increase in your heating costs lately? If you haven’t changed the settings on your thermostat, an increase in energy usage could indicate a malfunctioning furnace.

Sign #5: It’s awfully noisy.

Rattling, buzzing and humming are all signs that something has gone awry with your heating system. Should you hear any strange noises coming from your furnace, it’s best to call a professional right away.

Sign #6: It’s dirty — inside and out.

If you notice that your unit is spitting out dust, soot or dirt it’s time to let the pros have a look. This can indicate an issue with your duct system as well.
