Are Pests Threatening Your HVAC System?

It’s that time of the year again! Not only are the leaves falling and the temperatures dropping, but nature’s little critters are also frantically trying to find a nice, warm home for winter. Their number one pick? Exhibit A: Your HVAC system.

What makes HVAC systems so attractive to pests?

Well for starters, they’re always climate controlled! In the summer, the outdoor components are nice and snug and the ductwork is crisp and cool. In winter, it’s toasty all around! It’s like curling up next to a nice warm fire. On top of that, your unit can produce condensation, giving it the three most sought-after qualities (from a pest’s perspective) — dark, damp and warm.

What are the biggest risks with pests invading an HVAC unit?

    • Damage – Probably the most obvious repercussion is damage to your system, but also your home. Think of your HVAC unit as an open door. The infestation will often start there, but will eventually travel to other areas of your home — generating a need for some pretty expensive repairs!

  • Poor Indoor Air Quality – Droppings from pests can pollute your otherwise fresh air with pretty stinky odors. And, once you identify the pest problem, your ducts can be inundated with pesticide to treat the problem. Both are not only unpleasant but can cause some pretty serious health complications as well.

The good news? There are some pretty easy precautionary steps you can take to pest-proof and fortify your HVAC system. These include sealing up your air ducts, making sure entry points, like pipes and vents, are sealed shut, and making sure your condenser is in the clear!

Do you think a critter family has claimed your HVAC as their new home? It’s time to turn off the unit and place a call to both your local HVAC contractor and your local pest professional as soon as possible!
