How to Beat The Heat Without Central AC

No central air conditioning? No problem! It may seem as though life without a central cooling system is hard, and admittedly, it’s not as easy — but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. There are plenty of homeowners out there that make do with localized air conditioning units, mini-split systems, and some good, old-fashioned ingenuity.

So, if you’re looking to beat the heat on a budget this summer — with or without a central cooling system — here are some quick tips and tricks we’d suggest:

  1. Draw the drapes. Blinds and fabric curtains can work wonders to keep the hot sun from beating down into your home. You’d be surprised how much heat is generated from the sun’s rays alone! Keeping your curtains drawn tight during the hottest part of the day can really help keep temperatures down.
  2. Apply window films. When installed on east- and west-facing windows, energy-saving window films can help cut costs and keep your home cool. Their reflective nature acts as a first defense mechanism for your windows, before the blinds and curtains come into play.
  3. Air it out. When it’s not blistering hot, in the early mornings and evenings, open up those windows and let the fresh air in. The warmer air will flow on out, and your home will be filled with the fresh scent of summer — how’s that for a two-for-one?
  4. Fans are your friends. Portable fans, ceiling fans and whole house fans — fans of all shapes and sizes! Portable fans can be placed near open windows to encourage cool air to enter your home, and ceiling fans can be a huge benefit with their fins and direction are positioned to push cool air downward.
  5. Power down appliances. You’d be shocked how much heat some of the simplest appliances can give off! For your comfort, and also the sake of your energy bill, make sure appliances of all kinds are turned completely off when not in use, and avoid using heat- and steam-generating appliances (stovetops, ovens, washers, dryers, etc.) whenever possible.

Follow these tips, and we promise the hot heat of your typical New England summer will be a little bit more bearable — and if it’s not, well, you can always call Tyler Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration LLC to come install a cooling system in your home!
