The Best Way to De-Ice Your AC Unit

If your air conditioner has stopped producing cold air, there can be a variety of reasons why this is so. However, one of the more common instances we encounter are frozen-over evaporator coils — and they sure can cause a ruckus.

What makes your AC unit ice over in the first place?

When refrigerant is leaking or low, your AC will be unable to absorb heat properly. This can lead to iced over condenser coils, which will disrupt the heat exchange, and eventually, cause your unit to stop working entirely. In other words, your coils need to be kept warm in order for evaporation to occur, or else they’ll freeze.

What do I do if my AC does freeze over?

Before you get out your blow dryer, ask yourself, “am I an HVAC professional?” If the answer is no — which we’re willing to bet it will be for most folks — think twice before tackling this task as a DIY job. Instead, shut the unit down completely, turning off both the air conditioner and the power switches associated with your condenser unit. Then, give your local HVAC company a call.

Why do I need a professional to de-ice my AC?

Melting some ice may seem like an easy task to tackle — and sure, it can be — but, fixing the underlying issue that caused the ice to form in the first place is not. Having a licensed HVAC contractor assess the situation will give you peace of mind that not only will your system be back up and running in no time, but it will be issue-free and ready to tackle the hot summer days ahead with confidence.

Have you noticed that your unit is blowing warm air, continuously kicking on and staying on, or has mysterious ice buildup on its outdoor refrigerant line? These, along with a heavy amount of condensation formation and drainage can indicate that frozen evaporator coils are evident. In that case, it sounds like it’s time to call the pros!
