What To Look For Within A Faulty Pilot Light

It happens to the best of us, and sometimes, it can’t be stopped. Yes, we’re talking about the dreaded pilot light, which periodically goes out at home. Whether it’s on the fritz or simply can’t be re-lit, your home suffers from an absence of heat, as well as a lack of hot water, among many other things — and a cold shower in March isn’t our idea of a fun time. Oftentimes, the solution is right under your nose, and it can be fixed in a reasonable amount of time. Here are a few things you should do, if your pilot light ever goes out.

  • Inspect the issue. Sometimes, this is as easy as taking a look at the fixture and examining it for something that might be the case. For some, it might mean you’ve run out of gas! In that case, a simple refill can do the trick, and you can have it re-lit in no time.
  • Inspect gas valves. Sometimes, parts go bad. While it’s typically an easy fix, it’s important to also follow the exact steps necessary to ensure nothing is fitted incorrectly, leaving you with a gas leak. These parts range from gas valves, heat exchangers, thermocouples and more.
  • Reignite it yourself. It’s sometimes a good idea to attempt to relight the pilot yourself, but only if you know exactly what you are doing. Because you’re dealing with gas and fire, make sure you’re prepared and operating only under the safest conditions.
  • Call a professional. Arguably the safest option there is, making the call and having a trained technician inspect your unit is a key component in keeping everything operating at optimal performance. With years of experience within this field, they’ll be able to effectively get the job done and have you back up and running faster than you might think.
