Does My Air Conditioner Need Maintenance?

Things are warming up and we’re quickly heading into the high season for air conditioner use. If you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to start up your AC and make sure that everything is functioning properly before the heat really hits. If you’re unsure if your unit is good to go, or requires professional maintenance, here are three of the most common ways to troubleshoot.

  • Reset your thermostat. If your thermostat says one thing, but your overheated intuition says another, your first step is to try to give it a reboot. Test out it’s ability to kick on and off by first setting your temperature high for about a half hour. Then, set it very low and see if the system starts up. You can also reset the thermostat manually by conferring with the instruction manual.
  • Examine your vents. If you’re noticing warm air instead of cool, you may be due for a coolant charge. Turn on your AC and allow it to pump out air for about 15 minutes. By then, any residual warm air will have been pushed out and you should start to feel cool air instead. If not, give your technician a call right away.
  • Be aware of frost. If you notice frost build up on your system’s hoses, tubes, fan motors and more, especially where the coolant tank connects to the AC, you may very well have a coolant leak. Freezing occurs when coolant comes into contact with other elements outside the tank, so you’ll want to alert your AC technician for a thorough inspection.

Have you fired up your unit, followed our troubleshooting advice and concluded that your system might be due for repairs or a coolant charge?
