Tips to Make Your Boiler System Work Better

Keeping your home’s heating system running soundly is vital to the health of your family, and the overall well-being of your house. Luckily, there are a few surefire ways to boost your system’s efficiency and increase its lifespan in just a few simple steps.

Keep radiators and convectors clean. Dirt can cake on and reduce the efficiency of your heating system, making it have to work harder to heat a room. Avoid overworking your boiler by vacuuming radiators, convectors and exposed pipes regularly, and wiping them with a damp rag.

Give your system a break. Turning your inlet valve clockwise will reduce heat output, while counterclockwise will increase it. Make sure to adjust the valve as you see fit to avoid overworking your boiler.

Bleed your radiators when needed. If you find that some of your units are not getting as warm as others, cold air is likely trapped inside. Simply let the cold air out with a radiator key or screwdriver, allowing the warm water to fill that space and heat your home.

Install an insulated reflector. Often times, heat will escape into the walls on the backside of your radiator. To prevent this from happening, cover poster board with aluminum foil and slip it between your radiator and the wall to reflect heat back into the room.

Insulated your heat pipes. It’s not uncommon for hot water to lose heat as it travel through a frigid basement or chilly crawlspace. Luckily, installing pre-slit foam pop insulation is a quick and easy DIY solution.
