Furnace Sounds You Shouldn’t Ignore

It’s the coldest day of the year and you just got home from a long day at work. You change into some comfy clothes, make a cup of hot tea and grab your favorite blanket to get comfortable, read a book and enjoy the warmth of your home’s heating system. But nothing ruins a good book like being interrupted by the loud click and clack of a malfunctioning furnace! Luckily, some furnace sounds are more serious than others, and we’re here to decode some of the most common ones.

Knocking – If it sounds like someone’s knocking away from inside your furnace, it’s likely that you’ve got air caught in the lines. This can be quickly fixed by bleeding the lines to let out the excess air.

Rattling – It’s possible that the access panels of your furnace have come loose and are banging around, which would explain the rattling sound. Give them a look and tighten as necessary.

Squealing –
A whining or squealing sound is indicative of a broken belt or ungreased motor. To troubleshoot, turn the furnace off check the belt, and apply a few drops of motor oil to see if the sound stops.

Inconsistency – Does your furnace seem to turn on and off more often than scheduled? This could be a simple fix regarding the fuel or filter. However, it’s best to have a professional take a look.

If you’re having issues with your furnace and are unable to troubleshoot or correct them on your own, we suggest you give the professionals at Tyler Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration LLC a call.
