3 Simple Ways to Cool an Old Home Efficiently

There’s just something about living in an older home that has so much history inside it. The only downside is that updating an older home so you can enjoy modern conveniences can be difficult. Case in point: it’s an absolute pain to keep the place cool and comfortable during the summer, which leads to higher cooling expenses.

Luckily, there are a couple of things you can try. The trusted air conditioning company in the area, Tyler, shares some of them here.

1. Update your attic insulation. If the attic doesn’t have proper insulation, cool air may end up leaking into the space instead of being distributed evenly throughout your home. Update the attic insulation as necessary if it’s compromised. Blow-in insulation works best for an open and unfinished attic, while traditional rolled insulation is typically used for a finished one. Make sure to consult a professional so you’ll know more about your options.

2. Make sure the seal around windows and doors are intact. Gaps around doors and windows account for a large percentage of your home’s annual energy costs. To ensure your older home maintains a cool and comfortable indoor environment in summer, check the seals around your windows and doors. If they show signs of deterioration, call an expert to have them resealed. This prevents excess outdoor heat from entering your home and creating hot spots, which in turn, compromises indoor temperature.

3. Have a ductless AC installed. Most older homes are difficult to cool because they don’t have ducts, which a centralized air conditioning system generally uses to send cool air to multiple areas in your home. A ductless AC, however, takes care of that hurdle. As its name implies, this type of air conditioning system doesn’t require any ductwork to function. This makes them ideal for older homes that have no ductwork or present unique structural challenges.
