Spring Cleaning for Your HVAC System

Spring has arrived, and that means spring cleaning projects are right around the corner. As you prepare for your annual purge — scouring kitchen cabinets, closets and the like for unused or outdated items — don’t forget about the spring cleaning task that matters most — your HVAC unit! Here’s why having your unit serviced between seasons is important, and what you need to know to get it done right.

Do I need to clean my air conditioner and ducts?

Yes! While you’re not using your air conditioner a ton of dust can build up within it. You wouldn’t want to finish up spring cleaning with a spotless home, only to turn on your air conditioner on the first hot day of the year to have dust and dirt spew everywhere, would you? …We didn’t think so.

Not only that, but performing annual maintenance in general helps prolong your unit’s lifespan. Giving your entire HVAC system a good scrub down and check-up is key for keeping air flowing strong, which in turn keeps energy usage low. Your outdoor condenser should be clean and free of surrounding debris and foliage, and all your indoor registers and vents should be well-vacuumed and wiped down. The better kept your system is, the better able you’ll be able to ward off damage and any critters looking to take up residence in your ducts — yuck!

What are the warning signs my HVAC system is in distress?

There are a variety of red flags that can signal something has gone awry with your air conditioner, but these are two of the most common:

  • It’s blowing hot air. The fix can be as simple as adjusting the thermostat, changing your air filter, or cleaning out your unit. However, it can also mean you need to recharge your refrigerant or have a more serious repair performed.
  • It’s iced over. Air conditioners need proper airflow to keep the evaporator coil warm enough to prevent freezing. That being said, the most common cause of a frozen over AC is restricted airflow from dirty filters and the like. This can also indicate you’re low on refrigerant or that you require repairs to your unit’s blower motor.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to have your air conditioner cleaned and serviced by a professional. The warmer it gets, the harder it will be to bare a broken AC — even if it’s only for a few hours while you wait for our friendly, 24/7 service technician to arrive!
