January is Hobby Month, and we know that for some, doing work around the house and acting as “resident handyman” ranks high up on the hobby list. For that reason, we felt it was only right we share some insight on a starter kit for those looking to get into the handyman spirit this weekend. If you’re looking to build a basic toolbox, this list is a great place to begin.
Hammer: What would a toolbox be without a trusty hammer in tow? After all, the hammer is arguably the unofficial mascot of the construction industry. Make sure you choose wisely, and opt for a 16-ounce claw-style hammer with a comfortable grip. You’re likely to use this bad boy often!
Screwdrivers: Next up on our list of necessities are screwdrivers. We suggest a variety of both flathead and Philips-head screwdrivers in several sizes. However, if you’re trying to keep your toolbox compact and modern, opt for a screwdriver with interchangeable tips. Classic, yet sophisticated – and perfect for any DIY job you may encounter.
Measuring Tape & Level: The key to good handywork is accuracy, and this tool duo will help you ensure just that. Make sure your tape measure is at least 25 feet long and is equipped with a locking mechanism to make measuring long distances a breeze. Some higher end tape measures will actually come with a built-in level, but we suggest a standalone purchase. A 9-inch torpedo level should do the trick!
Wrenches & Pliers: Tackle leaky faucets and stubborn bolts with a good set of adjustable wrenches. You may also choose to add a socket set to your repertoire. For pinching and pulling at a smaller capacity, 8-inch needle nose and 10-inch groove-joint pliers are a must. Make sure the grips on all tools are nice and comfy.
Power Drill: No toolbox is complete without a good power drill to handle the heavy duty project. For best results, select a 12-18 volt model with a cord. While cordless might seem tempting, recharging that battery can be a pain. Instead, pair your standard drill with a good extension cord to increase mobility.
