What Are My Water Heater Options?

All good things must come to an end, and that includes the lifespan of your beloved water heater. Fortunately, they’re easy to replace with the help of a trained HVAC professional. The only problem is, there’s more than one option to choose from. So, here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know:

Conventional

Have you ever taken a trip to a friend or family member’s utility room, only to be greeted by a rather large and cumbersome tank? No, that’s not an ancient artifact of a submarine – it’s a conventional storage water heater. Conventional heaters can run on either natural gas, propane, oil or electricity, and require regular maintenance to keep things running smooth. Their large size allows them to store between 30 and 80 gallons of warm water at a time.

Tankless

If you prefer instant gratification, tankless water heaters are for you! As their name denotes they function without a storage tank, meaning that water is heated on demand. For this reason, they’re more cost-efficient than their conventional cousins, because you’re no longer wasting energy keeping gallons of water warm, that you may not even use. The only downside to tankless water heaters is lower water pressure overall and it may be difficult to run hot water in multiple areas concurrently.

Electric

Here in the New England area, electric water heaters aren’t as popular, and for good reason. They work by intensifying heat drawn from the air and transferring that heat to the water within your storage tank. By that logic, the warmer the climate, the more efficient an electric water heater will run. (Considering we’re averaging a high of 40 in the New Haven County area this time of year, you may not see too many of these bad boys around town.)
