3 Common Heating and AC Issues (and How to Prevent Them)

Well-functioning heating and cooling systems are key to maintaining a comfortable and energy-efficient home. However, even the best units can run into problems that may leave homeowners feeling less cozy and dealing with high energy bills. In this blog post, water heater repair expert Tyler Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration LLC discusses how to prevent three of the most common heating and cooling issues.

1. Thermostat Malfunction

The reduced comfort and inefficient operation of your unit can be blamed on a malfunctioning thermostat. To find out if this is the case, have it calibrated by a certified technician or replace the batteries as needed. If you are planning to replace it, go for the programmable thermostat, which allows you to set temperature schedules that align with your daily routine. When having it installed, make sure it is not located in an area where heat and cold can interfere with the temperature reading and cause the HVAC system to provide inconsistent comfort.

2. HVAC Filter Clogs

Dirty filters might be preventing your home comfort system from working efficiently. Over time, dust, debris and allergens accumulate in them, obstructing airflow and reducing the unit’s efficiency. This, in turn, affects indoor air quality and increases your home’s energy consumption, which will reflect on your monthly utility bills. Worse, it may experience a sudden breakdown. To prevent this issue, make sure to check the filters regularly and replace them if they’re already too dirty. Any heating and AC repair company will tell you that the ideal interval for air filter replacement is every one to three months.

3. Condensate Drain Blockage

A blocked condensate drain can cause water damage to your cooling system and home if left unaddressed. Signs of a blocked drain include water leaks or a musty smell. Clean the drain regularly and consider using a condensate drain line treatment to prevent clogs. To prevent damage, it’s important to have your system professionally maintained and inspected for potential issues.

A proactive approach to heating and cooling maintenance helps you save money, conserve energy, and keep the indoor environment clean.
