Warning Signs: How to Tell if Your Furnace Is in Trouble

How can you tell if your furnace is in trouble? Tyler Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration LLC, a top AC repair company in the state, lists the warning signs below, as well as how to troubleshoot them.

The Warning Signs

Keep an eye (and nose) out for the following warning signs:

No heat is coming out of the vents – Once you turn on your furnace, it should take only a few minutes for warm air to come out of the air ducts.

The furnace is blowing non-stop – Check if the furnace’s motor fans are running—you should hear a whirring sound. Something’s wrong with the furnace if no heat is coming out despite the fans running non-stop.

Cold spots in your home – If your furnace and air ducts are distributing warm air evenly throughout your home, indoor temperatures should remain consistent.

Unusual odors – It’s normal for musty smells to emanate from the vents when you turn the furnace on for the first run of the season. However, the smell of something burning is unusual and a cause for concern.

Simple Troubleshooting Solutions

While said signs can be a symptom of serious underlying issues with your furnace, they could also be the result of the wrong thermostat settings or other minor mistakes, such as:

Low gas supply – Your furnace may not be producing enough heat because it doesn’t have enough gas.

Incorrect thermostat settings – If you have a programmable thermostat, check if the date and time, as well as the temperature settings, are correct. If they’re wrong, your thermostat might be lowering the temperature when you’re at home, thinking you’re still at work.

When to Call In the Professionals

If simple troubleshooting doesn’t work, call an HVAC contractor. In addition to inspecting your furnace, it’d also be a good idea to have them take a look at your heater and perhaps perform a water heater repair if needed. That way, you’re less likely to run into problems in the middle of winter. Just make sure to hire a certified contractor to do this.
