Heat Your Home Safely This Winter

Home fires are not something that most people want to talk about, but with the cold weather here and the heat sources increasing, it’s something that shouldn’t be ignored. Your chance of a house fire is higher in the winter, but with the right knowledge and care, you can keep your home warm, cozy, and safe throughout the winter months. So here are just a few easy and surefire ways you can heat your home safely this winter:

Think of Fireplace Safety: It’s essential to have a sturdy fireplace screen to protect unwanted sparks from coming into the room. Keep children away from any heat source, and always have your chimney inspected yearly by a trusted professional.

Mind Your Flammables: When it comes to your heating equipment, you’ll want to keep the area free and clear. Your furnace, space heaters, wood stoves all should have a 3-foot distance away from anything that could go up in flames. If it’s flammable, don’t risk it, keep it away!

Read Instructions: All your equipment should be installed by a professional, but after that, the care is up to you. If you are using a fuel running space heater, always stick to the fuel that was suggested by the manufacturer.

Test Your Smoke Alarms: No matter how safe you are, accidents can still happen and that is where your smoke alarms come in. Your smoke alarms are there to alert you of a fire, but that is only if they are working. Your alarms should be spaced out within the house and tested monthly.
