Don’t Leave Your Furnace Out in the Cold!

Like with all other aspects of HVAC, maintaining your furnace regularly is the key to a long and successful lifespan. Here’s what you need to know to get your furnace up and running before the freezing temperatures.

Change the filter. The golden HVAC rule! When in doubt, always change your air filters. Allowing dirt and debris to remain in the system not only causes it to work harder, but also compromises your indoor air quality.

Bust out the vacuum. Not for your family room floors — though go ahead and clean those too if you’d like — but for the room where your furnace primarily lives. Gently vacuum out the entire area, removing dust from any electrical cords and crevices.

Inspect the furnace area. Sniff around. Do you smell anything funny? A rotten egg odor, a musty scent or perhaps a burning or gas smell. If anything smells awry, it’s always best to get a professional opinion. Take notice of the condition of your unit as well and listen for any strange noises when you start it up.

Change your detector batteries. Both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms should be checked and changed this time of the year. If you don’t have a CO detector in your home, purchase one and install it approximately 15 feet away from your furnace. This will ensure you and your family are protected from dangerous furnace fumes, should they escape.

Make a maintenance appointment. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Call your local HVAC company and have a professional come and take care of tuning things up for you.
