When it comes to selecting a new air conditioner for your home, the seemingly endless options can often be overwhelming. With so much to consider, and so many different systems available, it’s no surprise that some homeowners just don’t even know where to begin. Well, we say you should start with the SEER rating, and here’s why:
SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, measures the amount of cooling capacity that a machine has against the amount of energy needed to carry out the cooling process. In short, you want to look for higher SEER ratings, as higher rated units will put out more cooling power, for less cost.
As of January 2015, all air conditioner manufacturers are required to produce systems with a minimum SEER of 14. While 14-16 are typically the average, SEER ratings can be as high as 25. In order to decide which is right for your home, you must take several factors into account, including your region’s climate overall. It may be worth spending the money on a higher rated unit in the long run.
Need help deciding which SEER rating is the best match for your home’s cooling unit? Visit the U.S. Department of Energy at Energy.gov to test out their energy savings calculator and determine the SEER that’s best suited for your system.
