First, what is a SEER rating?

SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, measures the amount of cooling capacity that a machine has against the amount of energy needed to carry out the cooling process. In short, you want to look for higher SEER ratings, as higher rated units will put out more cooling power, for less cost.

What is the average SEER?

As of January 2015, all air conditioner manufacturers are required to produce systems with a minimum SEER of 14. While 14-16 are typically the average, SEER ratings can be as high as 25. In order to decide which is right for your home, you must take several factors into account, including your region’s climate overall. It may be worth spending the money on a higher rated unit in the long run.
