5 Summertime AC Maintenance Musts

Remember when you serviced your air conditioner back in spring, in preparation for the hot summer months? Well, if you thought AC maintenance was just a one-time, annual thing — you’re wrong! Keeping up with the well-being of your unit is important to keep cooling costs down, and prevent repair costs from rising.

Check your filter. This is the absolute golden rule when it comes to AC maintenance! You must be checking your filter monthly, and cleaning or changing it whenever necessary. A dirty air filter means poor air quality and a system that’s not able to work to its full potential.

Clean your coils. Just like your filters, your evaporator and condenser coils can collect dirt over time, especially while they’re working overtime to keep your home cool in the summer. Don’t compromise your home’s cooling capabilities for dirty coils! Check them often, and reduce exposure to debris-ridden elements, like dryer vents, fallen foliage and lawn mower clippings.

Straighten your fins. Your outdoor condenser unit had hundreds of tiny aluminum fins that help divert air inside. Unfortunately, these fins are fragile and can become bent over time. It’s up to you do check your unit regularly, and reshape any bent fins with a fin comb — found at your local hardware store.

Unclog your drains. Condensate drains can become clogged, which hinders a unit’s ability to control humidity levels effectively. The solution is simple — pass a stiff wire through all of your drain channels every so often to be clear any clogs that may have occurred.

Hire a professional. As you carry out your seasonal maintenance, don’t hesitate to give your local HVAC pros a call if you notice anything out of the ordinary. And if you don’t, it’s still a good idea to have a licensed technician take a look both before and after the cooling season to make sure nothing has gone awry.
