Common A/C Issues: When to Worry

If you feel like you don’t know much about your HVAC system, you are not alone. Many homeowners have a difficult time identifying the parts that make up the HVAC unit in the first place! With limited knowledge, it can seem like every A/C issue you face is a huge problem, but that isn’t always the case. Understanding your HVAC system and the problems that can occur can be confusing — we’re here to help!

Leaking Water: A small amount of water on or around your A/C is expected due to condensation. However, if you’re noticing large puddles forming you may have to call the pros. This can mean that part of your system is dripping, has a leak, or is draining improperly — which can lead to mold that can damage your system and be harmful to you and your home.

Strange Noises: Sometimes HVAC systems are so loud you can barely hear your own thoughts or it’s so quiet you may feel like it’s not even on… this is most likely normal. However, if your system is making banging, clanking, or rattling noises that most certainly isn’t normal! Fixing this problem could be as easy as removing debris from a vent but, it could also mean replacing a part which you should leave to the professionals.

Stinky Odors: The only time an odor is normal is at the start of the winter, when you start your furnace up for the first time in months. You will likely smell the dust burning off of it. Other than that, you should be wary of any odors coming from your unit. There are many different odors and problems that are attributed to each, so if you smell anything out of the ordinary, your best bet would be to call your HVAC technician to take a look.
