Quick Fixes for a Malfunctioning A/C

When turning on your air conditioner after the lengthy winter, it’s common to be met with a few slight speed bumps along the way. Luckily, most issues usually require a pretty simple fix. Others however, require the assistance and expertise of an HVAC specialist. If your air conditioner is acting out, here are some easy DIY fixes to try before calling in the reinforcements.

The air conditioner won’t turn on, or is cycling on and off too often.

  • Check your thermostat! More often than not, the secret to fixing an A/C with the mind of its own lies in your thermostat settings. First, be sure that you’ve switched it over to from “heat” to “cool” and make sure the correct temperature is set. If you’re still having issues, replace the battery or check the circuit breaker to make sure it hasn’t tripped.

The air coming out is not as cool as it normally is.

  • When was the last time you checked your refrigerant? It’s possible that you need to have it re-charged, or that your lines are not insulated properly. In this case, your best bet is to call a professional to determine the issue.

There’s water pooling near my furnace.

  • If you’re noticing puddles around your furnace, it’s possible that you likely have a blockage in your line somewhere. Normally, condensation forms and is carried out and away from the system by a series of tubes. When a tube becomes bent or detached, water is able to escape, causing pooling.

I hear strange rattling noises when turning on my A/C.

  • In most cases, noises that you hear from your cooling system signify that something is loose or needs oiling. Try tightening all screws and oiling all working parts first. If that doesn’t eliminate the sound, call a professional to check your blower motor and fan blade.
