3 Ways to Fix a Noisy A/C Condenser

A noisy air conditioner can really be nuisance. Not only can a loud condenser be a bother to for those inside the home in spaces that are adjacent to the unit, but the noise can really put a damper on an outdoor barbecue as well! Luckily, there are quite a few ways to rectify this pesky situation, and we’re here to tell you how.

Solution #1: Fence It In
Sometimes all it takes is a wooden enclosure to muffle the sound of a noisy air conditioner. Depending on the severity of the sound, you may be able to get away with putting up only one or two walls, rather than enclosing the entire unit. Before you begin to build, make sure you test your options by propping some plywood up against the condenser. When you build, make sure you leave at least three feet of space between the unit and the fence.

Solution #2: Cover It Up
Often times the compressor within the unit is the culprit of pesky sound. Luckily, your manufacturer can recommend a good sound blanket to help quiet the unit down. To install it, just turn off your unit’s power and remove the top panel. The fan motor will come out with the lid, leaving the compressor in view. While a helper holds the top panel, carefully position the sound blanket right over your compressor and close the unit back up.

Solution #3: Upgrade It
When all else fails, it’s time to call it quits and purchase a new condenser unit. A new model will be much quieter, and can help save you money on your cooling bills as well. We’d say that’s a win-win in our book!
