Why Is My Furnace Leaking?

Along with emergency furnace and water heater repair costs, having problems with your only source of heating during the winter is also incredibly inconvenient. Connecticut winters can be rough, so you want to make sure your heating system is in good working order before the cold kicks in. No one wants to find out their furnace has malfunctioned in the middle of a freezing-cold winter night.

Why Is My Furnace Leaking?

What should you do when your furnace is showing signs of leaking? Leaks are always a problem, no matter what type of HVAC system you have in your home. Here are a few tips from our experts at Tyler on how to deal with a furnace that’s suddenly started leaking.

Conventional Versus Condensing

There are two types of furnaces used in most homes, and the type determines the furnace and AC repair costs you’ll have to shoulder when leaks occur. In conventional furnaces, the exhaust pipes are usually made of metal. These furnaces often have an AFUE rating of 90 or lower. In older models, the AFUE may not even be listed at all. Condensing furnaces have PVC exhaust pipes and AFUE ratings of 90 and above. The causes and solutions for leaks in condensing furnaces are very different from those of conventional furnaces.

What Can Cause Leaks?

Experts recommend changing or cleaning your furnace filter at least once every 30 days. Clogged filters can often result in leaks in the furnace humidifier. Additionally, improperly-fitted flue pipes can leak water condensed from the heat exchanger. Some furnaces also have secondary heat exchangers. If the second unit starts to leak, this is a sign that your furnace is nearing the end of its lifespan.

Condensing Furnaces

The condensate pumps in condensing furnaces can also malfunction and back up condensed water into the pipes, causing a leak. If this happens, you’ll need to call your local furnace and AC repair company to replace the faulty pump.
