The cost to keep your home’s temperature regulated accounts for about 48% of your its total utility bill each year. Wouldn’t it be nice to get that cost down a bit? We certainly think so, which is why we’ve come up with a few simple ways to slash your spending on air conditioning this summer.
Detect air leaks with incense. Make sure your windows are shut and your fans are off. Then, light an incense stick and walk slowly around the perimeter of the room. Wherever you notice the smoke being pulled or pushed in a different direction, a leak that needs fixing likely exists!
Apply a window film. If your home gets a ton of sunlight, it’s air conditioner may also be working extra hard as well. The heat from the sun’s rays can warm up a room pretty quickly, which makes regulating the temperature in that space a struggle for your A/C. Luckily, heat-reducing window films are easy to install and virtually unnoticeable.
Bask in the shade. Much like window films, having tall trees and shrubbery around your home’s exterior can help keep the hot sun rays out. If you’re planning to do a little landscaping, keep your home cooling costs in mind as you make your selections! Properly placed trees and trellises can reduce your home cooling costs by up to 30%.
Select a programmable thermostat. Going with a programmable option will help you regulate your home’s temperature, even when you’re not there to do so. That means you can set your A/C to sustain a warmer temperature while you’re out of the house during the day to conserve energy.
Assess air filters monthly. Depending on the filters you select, you may be able to clean them rather than replace them. Either way, checking your filters for debris buildup can keep your system running smooth and energy efficient through the summer months.
Turn on your ceiling fans. Did you know that pumping your home’s temperature up past 78 degrees can save you 5-10% per degree on your cooling costs? Keeping your ceiling fans running can help cool things down so you can feel comfortable setting your thermostat higher than usual.
