Signs Your Water Heater Needs Replacing

What they say is true; all good things must come to an end, and that includes the life cycle of your water heater. What most homeowners don’t know, is that at only 10 years old most water heaters are already reaching the end of their run. But age isn’t the only indicator that signals you may be needing a replacement. Here are a few more signs that your water heater is reaching out for help.

Signs Your Water Heater Needs Replacing

Things are getting rusty.

Over time, the inside of your tank will start to rust and corrode from being exposed to water for so long. The easiest way to detect rust is to turn on the faucet. If you’re seeing rust spit out without your hot water, chances are there’s corrosion hidden in the tank. You may also notice corrosion near the temperature and pressure relief valve or the water inlet/outlet connections. These are all signs that you’re ready for a replacement.

The drain valve is malfunctioning.

Sediment can build up and settle in the bottom of your tank, inevitably causing your drain valve to clog. For this reason, we suggest flushing your water heater once per year to keep sediment buildup to a minimum. If your valve is already stuffed up however, it’s time for a new water heater.

There’s a puddling forming under the tank.

A leak is a surefire sign that something has gone awry internally. This usually means rust and corrosion have taken hold and broken the surface. Unfortunately, any sort of leak usually means you’ll need to replace your unit entirely.

Your water is coming out cold.

If your water heating isn’t heating water anymore, what more of a sign do you need? Often times this indicates an issue with the heating element or thermostat, but it can also mean a dip tube is broken within the tanks. If you’ve recently added on an extra bathroom or laundry room, it may also mean that your current tank isn’t large enough to handle the workload.
