Air Filter MERV Ratings Explained

If you’ve recently spoken to your AC repair company representative on the topic of air filters, chances are they asked you which MERV rating you prefer for your system. While you may know that air filter performance is measured by MERV numbers, it’s important to understand exactly what each level can filter out and which rating your air conditioner is even compatible with.

Air Filter MERV Ratings Explained

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This number is a good indicator of the effectiveness of various air filter products. Let our air quality experts at Tyler Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration LLC explain the meaning behind these important numbers so you can be sure to choose the right filters for your home’s needs.

High MERV Ratings

MERV ratings range anywhere from 1 to 20. Filters meant for residential use typically max out at 17, but on rare occasions people with unique medical needs can use HEPA filters rated at 17 or above in their homes. These higher-rated filters are more commonly used in industries with strict environmental control requirements such as laboratories or hospitals. It’s important to keep in mind that using them in residential HVAC units, especially if they’re incompatible with your system, could result in high AC repair costs.

Low-Grade Filters

Spun fiberglass and reusable air filters typically have a MERV rating between 1 and 4. These numbers are effective at filtering out pet hair, dust particles and other large contaminants, but they do very little to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) levels.

Filters for Residential Use

Homeowners typically have heating and cooling systems that are compatible with filters rated between 5 and 12. These mid-range products are particularly useful at trapping common allergens like pollen, mold spores and pet dander, as well as exhaust smoke, fine dust and some viruses and bacteria.
