Happy Memorial Day Weekend! The weather is finally starting to warm up, but while it may officially be beach season as of Monday, we’ve still got a little ways to go until the first day of Summer. That being said, don’t wait until it’s too late! Start up your air conditioner now, so you have plenty of time to perform repairs before it gets too hot!
Step 1: Tend to the filters. Whether you need to clean your reusable filters, or replace your disposables, make sure you don’t skip this important first step! In fact, you should get in the habit of checking your filters for debris once a month, both heating and cooling.
Step 2: Clean your condenser coils. Since your condenser unit is typically stored outdoors, it’s easy to see how one might become contaminated with debris. Prevent that debris from gumming up the works by removing the panels and vacuuming the coils with a soft bristle attachment.
Step 3: Scoop out any leaves. It’s not uncommon for dirt and leaves to blow into the base of your condenser unit. Make sure to scoop out any gunk and give the insides a good wipe down with a clean rag.
Step 4: Reinsulate coolant lines. Sometimes the foam insulation surrounding coolant lines can become disturbed over the course of the seasons. If you find that insulation has been damaged, make sure to reinsulate immediately to prevent losing valuable cooling energy.
Step 5: Give it a test run. Kick on your AC after you finish cleaning it out. If you notice any funny noises, or experience a lack of cool air, you’d best call your local HVAC technician! Remember, the sooner you call, the faster you’ll get it fixed before the height of the cooling season starts.
