Let’s face it, if there’s a way in, pests will most definitely find it! That’s why it’s so important to make sure your HVAC system and all of its components are properly pest-proofed from the start. Not only are pest infestations a costly burden, but they can wreak havoc on your home and the health of your family members by compromising your indoor air quality.
So, with that said, here are our best recommendations to pest-proof your HVAC system to keep your home and your loved ones safe:
- Seal those ducts. A warm cozy place in the winter and a nice, air conditioned place in the summer — why wouldn’t critters want to take up residence in your air ducts? The allure is certainly there, so make sure the access isn’t. Repair and cracks, gaps and large disconnections within your air duct system immediately.
- Block off entry points. Besides sealing off your ducts themselves, you’ll want to make sure any outdoor entry points for pipes and vents are sealed shut. This can be done with flue and vent covers, which can also be secured with standard caulking. Make sure you’re also checking these vents regularly, to make sure pests have not made nests nearby.
- Clear out your condenser. Mice, rodents and even insects can chew, scratch and leave droppings inside your air condenser. Not to mention the mess that would ensue if you were to turn your unit on while they were inside — yuck! Your best defense? Keep the area surrounding your outdoor condenser clear of tall grass and debris. You’ll also want to make sure it sits above the ground on a platform of cement slab as well.
Think your HVAC system may have been compromised by a pest infestation? If so, turn off the unit and place a call to both your local HVAC contractor as well as your local pest professional as soon as possible. That way, you can have an expert diagnose and resolve the issue, as well as help you pest-proof your system now to avoid any additional problems in the future.
