West Haven (once known as West Farms) was settled in 1648 and was at one time part of the original New Haven Colony. West Haven was not officially incorporated until 1961, giving reason for the moniker "Connecticut′s Youngest City". Ironically, West Haven is one of the state′s oldest settlements.West Haven is a great place to spot rare migratory shorebirds because the town′s coastline lies along the migration route. The Sandy Point Estuary is one of the sites featured on the Connecticut Coastal Birding Trail, and it′s also a local hangout for Sammy the harp seal. West Haven is also a great place to spot amazing seafood restaurants, shockingly luxurious boats, and magnificently hand–crafted works of art. Historic Bradley Point Park features breathtaking views of Long Island Sound and it marks the area where invading British troops landed on July 5, 1779.
Many area locals consider West Haven′s beaches to be the best of all of Connecticut′s shoreline. And the beaches are just minutes away from West Haven′s historic downtown shopping district. The weather is similar to surrounding areas of Connecticut, with yearly averages ranging from the mid 80s to the high 20s and an estimated 50 inches of rainfall.
