The local residents of Oxford will tell you that the Rich Farm Ice Cream sign on route 67 is a welcome landmark when you′re in the mood for some of the country′s best frozen treats. Oxford has a moderate climate, not unlike the surrounding communities in New Haven County. And when it′s summer in Western Connecticut, everyone agrees that it′s time to cool down at Rich Farms.According to the 2010 US Census, Oxford has a population of 12,272. Farmers in the 18th century took their livestock through Oxford as they were headed to the New Haven Port. However, the town began to lose its population when farmers traded in their lifestyle to being work in the nearby factories.
Oxford is a small, rural town that continues to progress despite the lull in the current national economy. Residents and business owners are blessed with one of the lowest mill rates in all of New Haven County. Oxford also has beautiful parks; some of which are Southford Falls State Park in the north, Jackson Cove Beach, and Kirks Pond in the center of town. Larkin Bridle Trail, created in the 1940s from the path of a former train track, is a scenic route for kids from ages 1–99. Oxford is regarded by many as the ″small town crown jewel″ of Connecticut.
