The first recorded settlement in Bridgeport was in 1659, but the city waited nearly 200 years to become officially recognized. Because of it′s location on Black Rock Harbor, Bridgeport became a thriving center for shipbuilding and whaling.PT Barnum, the famous circus promoter, is a former resident and may or of this industrious city. Barnum′s star attraction Charles S. Stratton, ″General Tom Thumb″, was also born in Bridgeport. Some historians subscribe to the idea that Barnum loved Bridgeport for the weather, believing the climate and clean air was good for his health. However, some may consider the weather in Bridgeport to be slightly extreme with very warm and humid summers and cold, snowy winters.
The citizens of Bridgeport would encourage you to stop by the Arena at Harbor Yard, the Downtown Cabaret Theater, and the Playhouse on the Green.
